Throughout the year at Willow Park Ecology Centre, we offer occasional workshops, seminars and activities of interest to people of all ages. Some sessions are free, while others have a low cost. These are the sessions planned for this season.

Stewardship Events 2007

Have fun at the Park with projects and recreational events!

A variety of volunteers enjoy the outdoors while caring for this community asset Ð wouldnÕt you like to have fun helping too? This season brings new projects and renewal to existing Willow Park features, a chance to experience interesting outdoor projects and events.


Organic Vegetable Community Gardens

Watching It Grow
June 10, 1-3pm
Individuals, families and groups are invited to join in for practical, physical and social experiences in gardening basics that can have immediate positive impact on the natural environment. Includes; natural pest control, late plantings, managing weeds and water resources.


Organic Vegetable Community Gardens
Early Harvest -August 19, 1-3pm
Follow the progression of the gardens from field-to-table. Great chance to get children started in understanding where their food comes from and how we depend on the environment. Active living that enhances the health of the environment while improving yours. Includes; early harvest, fall plantings, transplanting, theme gardens.


Putting It To Bed
October 21, 1-3pm
Season closing will continue to set up adults and children with the ÒtoolsÓ and skills they need to grow and harvest vegetables in their own yard. Includes; Harvest Celebration, cover crops, soil amendment, using your vegetables in recipes.


Butterfly Garden Club

Learn About Butterflies
June 24, 9:30-12pm
From what caterpillar becomes which butterfly, to their food and the flowers they like. Volunteers make the garden a success. If you have anything to share or would like to help out, we would love to hear from you! A great chance for practical gardening and outdoor family recreation with volunteer run crafts. Instil excitement in children about plants, animals and how we all depend on the environment!


Exploring Butterfly Habitats
July 15, 9:30-12pm
Fun for children and adults alike to see how plants and animals depend on each other and on the environment. Explore and enhance butterfly habitats and populations by planting, managing, walking and observing the gardens. Theme events with volunteer run crafts and making cool stuff.


Winter and Butterflies
September 16, 9:30-12pm
Adults, families and groups are invited to join in the Butterfly Garden Project and Club. See and learn how butterflies avoid freezing while you help to ensure that their habitat is suitable for their over-wintering needs as eggs, larvae or adults. Volunteer run handicrafts planned.

2007 Events and Projects

In 2007 Ðvolunteers- continue to help the Town of Halton Hills manage Willow Park (Ecology Centre). The Stewardship Committee has committed to overseeing preservation of habitat features which make the Park a unique ecotourist attraction. This will occur through volunteer events, community donations and an Evergreen Foundation grant.

2006 Events!

Organic Lawncare Workshop
Date: April 6th, 2006
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: Gellert Centre
Cost: $5/household in advance.

Why are pesticides bad? If I don't want weeds what options do I have? Learn from experts about healthy alternatives to chemically controlling your lawn and look like a pro on the field! Sponsored by TEAC.


Riverfest Norval 2006
Date: June 3rd and 4th
Time: June 3 (morning), June 4 12 - 8pm
Cost: $15/family of 4 ($5/adult, $3/child)

Riverfest 2006 celebrates the Credit River and raises funds for WPEC programs. The theme, w-a-t-e-r a most precious resource vital to us all!

Saturday hosts Hikes (leader training), and Project Wet training for outdoor educators
On Sunday join in hands-on activities like the Children's Water Festival, and other kid's and ecology activities including the famous Paddle to the Sea race. Enjoy live music all day and visit the Riverfest Outdoor Market exhibits, and Art Show and sale. Rotarians' Pancake Breakfast; lunch and a beer/wine tent are planned. Sponsored by many community groups, businesses and individuals and the Ontario Cultural Association Fund. Help is welcome! It'll be enriching and exciting family-fun, plan to attend!

Take a family trip to the Park! Meet people, have fun learning and enjoy the outdoors, while helping to make it better through our Park Stewardship Program. Each week entails new projects to keep the park viable for recreation and as a habitat refuge.

Also plan to do some outdoor artwork; for people of all ages. Bring your own supplies and equipment (e.g. paint, camera, easel, etc.) to enjoy your favourite portable art form and capture your memories. Meet at the Interpretive Centre to create and share your work with other "budding artists" in our community. Suitable for High School Volunteer projects.


Picture Perfect at Willow Park
Take a walk through Willow Park and snap the perfect picture; you may be the winner of our annual photography contest here at Willow Park. Categories include: Flora, Fauna and Friends of Willow Park. Entries are limited to one photo per category and must be submitted by August 11, 2006. Submissions will be displayed for judging at the 6th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Day on Saturday, August 19, 2006. Official contest rules.

Kids @ Play

Need some time to yourself? Bring your kids to Willow Park to spend a fun and educational day with us! All you have to do is pack a litterless lunch for your children and drop them off at Willow Park for an awesome day of fun and games, hands-on activities and creating cool stuff!

Spaces are limited!

Please make sure children are dressed appropriately; have on a hat and sunscreen; insect repellent as needed.
Children must be toilet-trained to participate.


After Dark at Willow Park
Date: August 12
Time: 7:30 - 9:30 pm
Open to All Ages

Ever wonder what creatures come out in the park after dark? Experience the dark side of WPEC. See and learn about bats, owls and many other nocturnal creatures found in the Park. Maybe we'll see the meteor shower! Spaces are limited! Remember to dress appropriately; long sleeves and insect repellent recommended.


6th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Day
Date: Saturday August 19th
Time: 4pm - 8pm

Community volunteers take care of a wide variety of tasks for WPEC making the Park and its programs possible. This event honours those who donate time to improve Willow Park. All volunteers are welcome to join planned activities, a BBQ, and our annual volunteer of the year awards ceremony to give special thanks for invaluable contributions and hard work.


International Migratory Bird Day
Date: October 1st
Time: 11-3pm (date and time subject to change)
Register by Sep. 22nd
Cost: Donations welcome

A great time to view many of the birds before they migrate for the winter. Learn about feeding winter birds, migration related issues, and much more! There will be a speaker, an informative tour of the park for beginner bird watchers and activities for children. Some refreshments will be provided, but be sure to bring a lunch, and join us!


Falling Leaves Festival
Date: October 29th
Time: 10-4pm
Register by October 20th
Cost: Donations welcome

Winter is almost here. Come and join a variety of activities, such as pumpkin carving, making cool stuff and much much more! Probably the last time we'll see the park with its beautiful colours of nature until next year so help celebrate fall the coming of winter and have fun helping put the park to bed for the season.

Hands On Willow Park
Date: 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month
June through September
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Much of the care of the park is volunteer based and if it wasn't for volunteers the park would not be possible. You are invited to come and volunteer your time. Meet new people; have fun learning and being outside. Willow Park is a great place for high school students to complete their volunteer and community involvement requirement for their diploma. It is fun and easy to participate in a weekend event or help out a few hours at a time in the park.


"Artists @ Play" in Willow Park
Date: Sundays, June 5 to October 15
Time: 10 am - 3 pm

Willow Park will be hosting a weekly "Artists @ Play". It's a great site to create outdoor "Plein Air" art. Bring your own supplies and equipment (paints, pens, cameras, etc.), and meet at the Interpretive Centre to enjoy your favourite portable art form. This is a chance to meet, create, and share your work with other artists in our community. Stay as long as you want.!
So come -- bring friends and family -- or join us to make new friends.


Kids @ Play
